Game Review: REsident Evil 5

It’s been several years since Resident Evil 4 re-invented the classic zombie-horror series. But now Resident Evil 5 brings it to next generation. RE5 plays almost identical to its predicissor, but that isnt a bad thing because REsident Evil 4 had awesome gamepaly. Those out there who were dissapointed with how RE4 re-invented the series will be dissapointed in this one, but really did you expect a ‘return to form’ after RE4’s massive commercial success and critical acclaim. But if you enjoyed RE4, you will defeintly enjoy RE5’s gameplay. Graphicly the game improves not only upon RE4, but is one of the best looking games on the PS3. The story of the game picks up a couple years after RE4, Chris is Africa with a new(and unbelieveably hot) girl named Sheva, investigating a weapon being used in a terrorist attack. THe story starts out great, but ends terribly. I’m not going to give away any spoilers, but I will say fans of Wesker will be SEVERELY pissed off.

There was a lot of exictement when it was announced that RE5 would feature co-op play. Co-op play works great, its clear Capcom put a lot of work into it. However, the I wish the game itself hadnt been built around it. If you play by yourself you’ll still be stuck with an AI controlled partner. Fourtunitly the AI is some of the best I’v ever seen in a game, but it does ruin the feel of the game. Also you have a very limited inventory(9 slots, but everything takes up one slot), and you have to manage it in real time, which can be very very annoying in the middle of a fight(I cant count the number of times I ran out of ammo and had to switch guns in mid fight). This makes sense in a game built around co-op, but they should have made it that when you playing single player the game pauses when you open the inventory/

RE5 is a bit dissapointing because of the lengh, its shorter than RE4, taking maybe 12 hours at the most. However it has an extremely high replay value, not only because of co-oping with your friends, but also tons and tons of stuff to unlock, and it also features the mercenaries mini-game, first introduced in RE3, and which works perfectly with RE5’s combat system.

Overall Resident Evil 5 is one of the best games currently out on the PS3, and is a worthy follow up to Resident Evil 4. Honestly I cant say which I prefered. Co-op is a great addition I expect to see in future installments. Those of you who didnt like RE4 or were expecting this to be a ‘return to form’ will be extrmely dissapointed. And a lot of people will be dissaointed with the storyline. But if you enjoyed RE4, or you’re just looking for a game that will entertain you, dont skip this one.
